A residency program in med-peds is four years in length, contrasted with three years for internal medicine or pediatrics alone. Upon completion of a med-peds residency, a doctor can practice in the areas of internal medicine, pediatrics or can complete a fellowship program to further specialize in an internal medicine or pediatrics sub-field. The average length of residency training is about four and a half years. The shortest residency training programs are three years and the longest are seven. After residency training, some people pursue fellowship training which can range in length from one to three years, on average.

Heather Toth, MD, program director for the med-ped residency program at Medical College of Wisconsin and a hospitalist at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, both in Milwaukee, doesn’t regret her decision to put in the extra work required to be a hospitalist for all age groups. Not only does our program give four years of outstanding training, but the location in Shreveport, LA allows for a great place to live while moving through residency.

I chose Med-Peds in Buffalo because there is so much variety in terms of the patients we see here. Because we rotate at multiple sites, we interact with the rural population, urban population, refugee population, as well as in primary care. There's never an opportunity for boredom here, and I'll leave residency prepared for the future. The LSU Med/Peds Residency is a four-year program with two years each of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, composed of alternating four-month blocks.
